Rescue Training is heating up for the summer!
By Lieutenant Joseph Ianovale Jr
June 4, 2016
Well as the temperatures are rising as well as the humidity, firefighters from The Nazareth Fire Dept., Upper Nazareth Fire Dept., Hecktown Fire Co., Palmer Municipal Fire Dept., and Bath Fire Dept. threw on their turnout gear and helmets for some Vehicle Rescue Operations Training. Rescue Ops is the second part of three classes for the PA state certification of Basic Vehicle Rescue Technician and gives the students hands on training on how to use basic hand tools and specialized rescue tools in the event of performing a rescue at a motor vehicle accident. Students work from the bottom up, from cutting vehicle posts with a hacksaw, using air-chisels to dismantle and access the locking mechanisms, and using reciprocating saws to cut door hinges. Now none of those ways are the most time efficient ways to gain access to a patient, but in the event that a hydraulic tool fails you must have a plan B, C, D, etc. Thinking outside of the box is very common in vehicle rescue, and the Firefighters definitely got a taste of that today in their practical training. We would like to send a big thank you to Hecktown Fire Company (Lower Nazareth Township) for hosting the classes for Rescue Technician. Also the classes are presented through Bucks County Community College.
